Victoria Park Sign
A rare opportunity to own a piece of social history that's incredibly decorative at the same time! An amazing large, original hand-painted sign for "Victoria Park Swimming Bath" in fetching calligraphic font on solid pitch pine with deeply moulded frame. Lovely muted colours and in utterly original condition. From the old swimming pool in Buckfastleigh, Devon but no mention of the actual town on the sign. c.1890s
Prominent benefactors and owners of the woollen mills that dominate Buckfastleigh, the Hamlyn family gifted Victoria Park and the swimming pool therein to the townspeople in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The sign was commissioned around this time.
